12 Fun Summer Writing Prompts to Engage Middle School Students

The end of the school year can be a distracting time for students in middle school. It’s hard to work when summer is on the brain! These fun writing prompts allow students to think about vacation while still practicing important writing skills.

Descriptive Summer Writing Prompts

  • Use all 5 senses to describe a county fair.

  • Describe what sand feels like, making sure to include a simile, metaphor, and personification.

  • Describe what it feels like to sleep late in the morning and have nowhere to go.

  • Create a metaphor to describe your favorite ride at a waterpark.

Persuasive Summer Writing Prompts

  • Is it ethical to show animals at the county fair?

  • If a person owns a vacation home on the beach, how much of the ocean should legally belong to them?

  • How early is “too early” to wake up on vacation?

  • Should waterpark safety be regulated by the government?

Narrative Summer Writing Prompts

  • Write a story from the perspective of a calf in the county fair.

  • Write about a time when things didn’t go as planned at the beach.

  • Write a stream-of-consciousness paragraph from the perspective a person on vacation who does not want to get out of bed.

  • Write a narrative from the perspective of a wave pool.
